NICK & JAKE

America in 1953 (as she would continue to do periodically) was beginning to squander the flood tide of international good will earned in WWII. Senator Joe McCarthy was on a rampage in Washington, and the fledgling CIA was starting to dabble in nation-building.

Into this moment of history wander refugees from the classic fiction of the 20th century. Nick Carraway (The Great Gatsby) and Jake Barnes (The Sun Also Rises) begin a correspondence that leads to a close friendship, and widens to include Larry Darrell (The Razor's Edge), Alden Pyle (The Quiet American), Lady Brett Ashley and Robert Cohn (The Sun Also Rises); and from real life, Cohn's nephew Roy and his pal Davey Schine, Roy's boss Joe McCarthy, CIA boss Allen Dulles and his minions, French intellectuals Sartre and De Beauvoir, Iranian premier Dr, Mohammed Mossadegh, and sex change pioneer Christine Jorgensen.
